Perception Test Challenge - Terms and Conditions

This Perception Test Challenge (the “Contest”) is run by Google DeepMind (“GDM”). To enter this Contest, you must read and agree to these terms and conditions (“Terms”). By entering the Contest, you agree that these Terms will apply to you.Throughout these Terms, “you” means you individually, or your team, as applicable.

  1. Eligibility
  1. To participate in the Contest you must:
  1. be at least 18 and
  2. not be: (i) prohibited by applicable export controls and sanctions programs from participating in the Contest, or (ii) a wholly or partially state-owned entity or an employee of the government or of a government-controlled entity.
  1. All determinations of eligibility will be made at GDM’s sole and absolute discretion. GDM reserves the right to verify eligibility and to adjudicate on any related dispute at any time. No correspondence will be entered into.

  1. How to Participate
  1. You must:
  1. Create an account on eval.ai platform.
  2. Download the challenge data for the different challenge tracks indicated in each track.
  3. Run your model to obtain predictions for each task included in the challenge track.
  4. Upload your results on the challenge page for the validation and/or test phases. Note that only public submissions for the test phase are considered for the final competition.
  5. Include an email address with your submission in the test phase.
  6. Participants need to submit a technical report (PDF file) by September 25th using this submission form. Uploading the file requires a gmail account. If you do not have one and you are not able to create one (as indicated in the form), please send the same information by email to viorica@google.com, by the same deadline. Recommended length: 2 pages (excluding references), using any template you prefer. The report should explain the basics of how your model works (e.g. what datasets it was trained on, what architecture it uses, evaluation mode)., describing the model you used to obtain the predictions.
  7. All competitors must follow the competition rules outlined in each challenge track.
  1. All data provided through the registration process must be complete and correct.

  1. Key Dates

The validation phase for all the challenge tracks begins throughout July. The test phase begins at 12:00am GMT on 1 August 2023 and ends at 11:59 pm GMT on 16 September 2023 ("Contest Period").

  1. Determining the winners

Up to 6 winners will be selected across all the challenge tracks by a committee formed of 5 experts, based on the results obtained by the competitors; see each challenge track for evaluation metrics used in the challenge.  

  1. Prizes
  1. Up to 6 prizes will be awarded, together totaling 15,000 EUR.
  2. A competitor may accumulate prizes across different challenge tracks.
  3. The prizes will be awarded at the First Perception Test challenge-workshop organised as a satellite event to the ICCV conference, in Paris, 3 October 2023.
  4. Winners will present their methods in the workshop, in person, or online if they cannot join in person.
  5. Prizes cannot be awarded to competitors who are: (i) resident of, or ordinarily resident in a, US embargoed country; or (ii) an employee, officer, or director of GDM, its subsidiaries and affiliated companies, or the immediate family, or living in the household, of any such persons.
  6. Prizes will be awarded to winners by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as sponsored by GDM.
  7. All decisions by GDM regarding Prize winners are final.

  1. Notification of Winners and Winners’ Obligations
  1. If you are a winner, GDM will notify you that you have won a Prize by sending an email to the address you provided on entry to the test phase of the Contest.
  2. GDM is not responsible for lost, late, or damaged entries, or for technical malfunctions of any kind impacting the entries including, for example, electronic transmission errors, theft,destruction, unauthorized access, or alterations. Entries are void if they are in whole or in part incomprehensible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error, forged, mechanically reproduced or obtained through fraud or theft.
  3. GDM will not be liable for unsuccessful efforts to notify you if you are a winner. If you decline a Prize, do not respond to the Prize notification within 7 days of the notification being sent, fail to claim the Prize in the manner specified, are unavailable for Prize fulfillment, fail to abide by these Terms or are ineligible, GDM may select an alternative winner from all remaining participants.
  4. If you win a Prize, you will be solely responsible for ensuring that you comply with any applicable tax laws and filing requirements.

  1. Privacy
  1. You acknowledge that GDM may collect, store, share and otherwise use personally identifiable information provided during registration for the Contest. GDM will use this information for the purpose of the Contest only and will process any such personal information in accordance with its Privacy Policy (http://www.google.com/policies/privacy/).
  2. Your information may also be transferred to countries outside your country residence, including the United States. Such other countries may not have privacy laws and regulations similar to those of your country of residence.
  3. You have the right to request access, review, rectification or deletion of any personal data held by GDM  in connection with the Contest by writing to legal@deepmind.com.

  1. Intellectual Property Rights
  1. Any intellectual property rights of GDM included on this website is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the "License"); you may not use this file except in compliance with the License. You may obtain a copy of the License at https://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0. Unless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing, software distributed under the License is distributed on an "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or implied. See the License for the specifics governing permissions and limitations under the License.  
  2. Any intellectual property rights (including moral rights) in and to any content submitted by you as part of your entry into the Contest, is licensed under the Apache Licence 2.0.
  3. You confirm that you are entitled to any intellectual property rights in your entry and that you have not copied your entry, in whole or in part, from any other existing work.
  4. You will not use, incorporate, imitate, or combine any of our trademarks (names or logos) or visual identity (distinctive color combinations, graphic designs, product icons, or imagery associated with GDM)  in your entry, brand name, product name, business or trade name, website domain, or slogan.
  5. You will not use the GDM logo or any of our brand elements in any way that implies affiliation, endorsement, or sponsorship without permission.

  1. Right To Cancel, Modify Or Disqualify
  1. If for any reason outside GDM’s control, the Contest is not capable of running as planned GDM may, at its sole discretion, cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest.  
  2. GDM may, acting reasonably: (a) disqualify any participant who tampers with the submission process or any other part of the Contest or whose conduct is contrary to the spirit of the rules and declare void any entries based on such conduct; or (b) declare void any entries resulting from any errors materially affecting the result of the Contest or the number of competitors.

  1. Limitation of Liability & Disclaimer of Warranties
  1. Nothing in these Terms will exclude or limit the liability of GDM or its affiliates for:
  1. death or personal injury as a result of the negligence of GDM or its affiliates;
  2. fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
  3. any other liability that may not be excluded or limited under applicable law.
  1. Subject to clause 9.1, GDM shall not be liable under or in connection with this Contest (whether in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise) for any:  
  1. loss of profit; or
  2. indirect or consequential losses;

suffered or incurred by you (whether or not any such losses were or were not foreseeable or within the contemplation of the parties).

  1. Subject to clause 9.1, and to the extent permitted by law, all warranties, conditions or terms, express or implied, relating to the Prize, its use, value or enjoyment, including (without limitation) its satisfactory quality or fitness for purpose, are excluded, with the exception of any standard manufacturer's warranty that may apply to the Prizes.
  2. Subject to clauses 9.1 and 9.2 GDM's total liability to you under or in connection with this Contest (whether in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise) is limited in aggregate to £5,000. 

  1. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms shall be governed by English law and you and GDM submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts in relation to any dispute concerning these Terms.
